China has condemned a militia attack in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that resulted in the deaths of several Chinese citizens. The attack occurred on Wednesday at a mining site in the gold-rich northeastern province of Ituri. Media reports, citing sources, indicated that four Chinese nationals were among the victims. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has called for swift action to apprehend and punish the perpetrators.
Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Response
The Chinese Foreign Ministry, through spokesperson Mao Ning, expressed deep concern over the incident. Mao confirmed that the attack targeted a Chinese-funded private enterprise, leading to the death and disappearance of several Chinese citizens. China is actively communicating with DRC authorities to locate those who are missing. “We urge the DRC to pursue and punish the perpetrators in accordance with the law as soon as possible,” Mao stated during a regular press briefing.
Security Measures and Warnings
Mao Ning emphasized the need for enhanced security measures to protect Chinese citizens and enterprises in the DRC. She advised those already in high-risk areas to evacuate immediately. The Foreign Ministry highlighted the ongoing security challenges in northeastern DRC, an area plagued by violence due to competition for influence and valuable mineral resources. The ministry has previously issued several security warnings regarding the region.
Context of the Violence
Wednesday’s attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Ituri province, where militia groups vie for control over the region’s abundant mineral wealth. The long-term security situation remains precarious, with frequent clashes between armed groups and government forces.
