A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Haixi Prefecture in northwest China’s Qinghai Province on Tuesday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC).

The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres and hit the high-altitude region at 5:06 pm Beijing time (0906 GMT), CENC said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Local authorities have begun assessing the impact of the earthquake, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Several aftershocks were detected following the initial tremor, including one measuring approximately magnitude 5.

Qinghai, located on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, is a seismically active region that experiences frequent earthquakes due to ongoing tectonic activity. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as assessments and emergency response measures remain under way.
