Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is considering a visit to India in early July for a potential meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the northeastern state of Assam, broadcaster TV Asahi reported on Thursday.
The proposed meeting location is significant, as Assam is emerging as a key industrial zone where a semiconductor manufacturing plant is currently under development.
Focus On Economics And Security
According to the report, the two leaders are expected to discuss strengthening economic ties and expanding security cooperation, with particular attention to China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.
The meeting would follow their last interaction at the G20 Summit in November, where both sides had signalled deeper strategic convergence.
Scheduling And Final Decision Pending
Takaichi’s visit is not yet confirmed. She is expected to take a final decision based on her schedule, including participation in the NATO Summit in Turkey on 7–8 July and commitments in the Japanese parliament.
If it proceeds, the visit would mark an early high-level engagement between the two leaders and further reinforce India–Japan strategic alignment.
Strategic Context
India and Japan have steadily expanded cooperation in infrastructure, technology and defence in recent years, with both countries increasingly aligning their Indo-Pacific strategies amid shifting regional power dynamics.
