China’s foreign ministry has rebuked recent joint statements from the U.S. and Japan, accusing them of making false claims about China’s maritime activities and military development.

This response follows U.S. and Japanese leaders criticizing Beijing’s “provocative” actions in the South and East China Seas, its joint military exercises with Russia, and the rapid expansion of its nuclear arsenal.

U.S, Japan unveil military structure

On Sunday, the U.S. and Japan unveiled a new military structure set to operate alongside Tokyo’s plans to establish a joint command for its forces by March 2025. These measures aim to address what both countries describe as an “evolving security environment” with various threats from China.

During a regular press briefing, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, accused the U.S. and Japan of maliciously attacking and discrediting China on maritime issues.

He condemned their remarks on China’s military development and defence policy as irresponsible. Lin emphasised that China is strongly dissatisfied with the exaggeration of its threat and the malicious speculation of regional tensions.

U.S.-China clash

The U.S. has frequently highlighted China’s rapidly growing military and nuclear capabilities in its annual reports. However, Lin asserted that China follows a path of peaceful development, pursuing a defensive national defence policy.

He insisted that China’s national defence construction and military activities are legitimate and reasonable. Furthermore, Lin stated that China maintains its nuclear capabilities at the minimum level necessary for national security and does not threaten any country.

China urges U.S., Japan

Lin urged the U.S. and Japan to stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and to cease creating imaginary enemies. This exchange highlights the increasing tensions in the region, with China defending its military actions as non-threatening while the U.S. and Japan remain concerned about China’s assertiveness and expanding military power.

Meanwhile, foreign ministers from Australia, India, Japan and the United States said on Monday they were seriously concerned about intimidating and dangerous manoeuvres in the South China Sea and pledged to bolster maritime security in the region.
The joint statement came after talks between the so-called ‘Quad’ countries in Tokyo, attended by Australia’s Penny Wong, India’s Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Japan’s Yoko Kamikawa and Antony Blinken from the U.S..
