‘China Doesn’t Have Appetite for Border Compromise With India’

NEW DELHI: It’s hard to overstate how little is known about how the Chinese system works; even if you are within the system, it is difficult to know what the top leader thinks, says Joseph Torigian, Assistant Professor at the School of International Service, American University, Washington, DC. Speaking to StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale on ‘The Gist’, Torigian, who studies Chinese and Russian politics and foreign policy, said Galwan (clash between Chinese and Indian troops in 2020) came as a surprise as to why China chose that particular moment, especially because it galvanised Delhi to think about the China relationship in a significantly different way. “China doesn’t have a lot of appetite for compromise when it comes to the border issue and not settling it allows China to put pressure on India whenever it wants to,” he added.
