The United Kingdom(UK) has raised its national terror threat level from substantial to severe, following an attack on two Jewish men in the North London neighbourhood of Golders Green.

In a statement posted on X, the UK Home Office attributed the change to a “rising Islamist and extreme right-wing terrorist threat,” as well as April 20’s “abhorrent antisemitic terrorist attack.” The directive urged the public to remain vigilant and report concerns to the police, noting that security services are working “day and night” to maintain safety.

It also added that the UK government is making its ‘largest investment’ in history to protect Jewish communities. £25 million in funding will increase police patrols and security measures at synagogues and Jewish schools, an official post said.

Assessing the Threat

The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC), the body responsible for determining the national terror threat level in the UK, clarified that the increase was not solely a response to the Golders Green incident. According to the JTAC, the terror threat level has been rising across Great Britain for some time.

The UK’s threat scale consists of five levels; “severe” is the second-highest, indicating a high level of peril, surpassed only by “critical.”

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor told the BBC that police casework is increasing across various ideologies. “Within that, we are seeing an elevated threat to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions in the UK,” Taylor stated.

Recent Incidents

The elevation of the threat level follows a series of violent incidents targeting the Jewish community:

In October 2025, a car-ramming and stabbing attack outside a Manchester synagogue left two people dead and three in serious condition. In early March 2026, four Hatzola ambulances, owned by a Jewish charity, were set on fire in a synagogue car park in Golders Green. More so, in recent weeks, the Finchley Reform Synagogue in North London was attacked, followed days later by an incident at Kenton United Synagogue, where a bottle containing an accelerant was thrown through a window.

Britain last reached a “severe” threat level in 2021, following the bombing of Liverpool Women’s Hospital and the killing of lawmaker David Amess.
