A gunman opened fire near a high-profile Washington gala on Saturday night, forcing the evacuation of U.S. President Donald Trump and triggering panic inside a room packed with the country’s political elite.
The chaos unfolded at the Washington Hilton, where a man armed with a shotgun fired at a Secret Service officer stationed at a security checkpoint. The officer survived after being struck in the vest and was later discharged from hospital, according to officials.
Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, a California resident believed to have been a guest at the hotel.
He was quickly subdued, taken into custody, and transported to a hospital for evaluation. Investigators said he was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, but his motive remains unclear.
In a late-night press briefing at the White House, Trump said he believed he may have been the intended target. “The officer is in good shape,” he told reporters, adding that early assessments suggest the suspect acted alone. “It looks like a lone wolf.”
The incident has intensified concerns over the security of top U.S. officials, particularly at high-profile public events. The annual dinner, long considered a cornerstone of Washington’s social and political calendar, was attended by senior administration officials, cabinet members, and journalists, all under heavy security.
Witness accounts and video footage paint a picture of sudden panic. Around 8:35 p.m., the sound of gunfire from the rear of the ballroom triggered a wave of confusion before erupting into alarm.
Guests were heard shouting “Get down!” as many of the roughly 2,600 attendees dove beneath tables. Security personnel drew weapons and formed protective shields around key officials, while others rushed the stage.
Trump, along with First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance, was swiftly evacuated as armed agents flooded the room.
Some officers in tactical gear entered with rifles drawn, securing exits and sweeping the venue. Cabinet members were escorted out individually under tight protection.
Closed-circuit footage later released showed the suspect charging through a checkpoint, catching security off guard before officers responded. He managed to breach two layers of security before being tackled. No return fire was reported.
Despite the panic, some attendees reportedly began chanting “USA, USA” as the situation stabilised.
The dinner was ultimately cancelled. Trump remained backstage for nearly an hour before leaving the venue, later remarking that he had not wanted to exit, echoing his past displays of defiance following earlier threats to his life.
The venue itself carries historical weight. In 1981, then-President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded outside the same hotel in an assassination attempt that stunned the nation.
Saturday’s events also come against the backdrop of heightened political tensions in the United States. Trump has survived two previous assassination attempts since 2024, including a shooting at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania and a foiled armed threat at his golf club in Florida.
Investigators are now focused on how the suspect managed to bring multiple weapons, including a shotgun, into a heavily secured venue hosting one of the most closely guarded gatherings in Washington.
As officials continue to piece together the timeline, the incident is likely to prompt renewed scrutiny of security protocols protecting the country’s highest-ranking leaders.
