Beijing Confirms India-China ‘Reach Resolution’ On Relevant Border ‘Matters’

India-China

A day after India’s announcement of a border agreement, China confirmed on Tuesday that both countries have reached a resolution on key issues regarding their border conflict.

Following close communications through diplomatic and military channels,”we have reached a resolution on the relevant matter and will work to implement solutions,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Tuesday.

The Chinese statement comes amidst growing speculation of a meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, where both leaders arrived today.

“We will keep you updated if anything comes up,” Lin said when asked about the potential meeting between the two leaders.

Diplomatic And Military Cooperation

This agreement is expected to lead to the disengagement of troops and eventually resolve the tensions that began in 2020 along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Bilateral ties were in limbo following the military standoff between India and China, which began in May 2020, following clashes near Pangong Lake in Ladakh and the Tibet Autonomous Region, as well as other locations along the LAC, including the Galwan Valley. In June 2020, deadly skirmishes resulted in casualties on both sides.

During a special briefing on Monday ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Russia for the BRICS Summit, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had confirmed that an agreement had been reached on patrolling in the disputed areas along the LAC.
