Japanese cinema appears to be the latest sector affected by ongoing diplomatic tensions between China and Japan, following reports that no Japanese films were included in the programme of this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival.

The 28th edition of the festival opened on 12 June in Shanghai with the launch of a new “Technology Creation and Fabrication Unit” and a parallel briefing on the Shanghai High-Tech Film and Television City project in Songjiang District.

The opening ceremony brought together senior officials and industry representatives, highlighting what organisers described as a new phase in Shanghai’s ambition to combine film production with advanced technological development.
