Sergio Gor, billed as a close confidant of President Donald Trump, has taken charge as the new U.S. Ambassador to India. Claiming that “no partner is more essential than India” to Washington’s long-term economic and strategic goals, he told journalists in Delhi that “Real friends can disgree but always resolve their differences,” an oblique reference to the tariffs levied on India for buying Russian oil.
Add to that another 500% tariff that Trump has announced with Russia, China and India the target. Tariffs of that scale signals the end of any viable trading relationship but Gor emphasized that dialogue remains open, pointing to the strong political relationship between the two countries and calling U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi “real friends.”

But India and U.S. are expected to take up trade issues in their next round of talks scheduled for Tuesday.
He said India would be invited next month to join Pax Silica, a US-led initiative aimed at building a silicon supply chain spanning critical minerals, semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Gor highlighted opportunities for cooperation in security, counterterrorism, energy, technology, education and health, suggesting that current frictions should not define the relationship. He emphasised that “open channels of communication remain intact”, and both sides are committed to dialogue rather than confrontation
