U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he believes China played a role in persuading Iran to negotiate a ceasefire in the conflict involving Israel and the United States.
China’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday that it welcomed the ceasefire, adding that Beijing had made its own efforts towards achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.
“China has consistently advocated for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities, as well as the resolution of disputes through political and diplomatic channels,” foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said.
She did not provide details of China’s efforts when asked during a regular press briefing.
