Donald Trump said he was not concerned about the electoral defeat of Viktor Orbán and expressed confidence in Hungary’s incoming leader, Péter Magyar.
Speaking to ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl on Tuesday, Trump said: “I think the new man’s going to do a good job — he’s a good man.”
Limited Role in Campaign
Trump said he had not been heavily involved in Orbán’s campaign and was unsure whether his direct participation would have changed the outcome.
“He was behind substantially,” Trump said. “I wasn’t that involved in this one. Viktor’s a good man, though.”
He added that he did not know whether it would have made a difference if he had travelled to Hungary himself instead of sending Vice President JD Vance to campaign.
Orbán’s Defeat After 16 Years
Trump had backed Orbán in the lead-up to the vote and briefly addressed a campaign rally in Hungary, where Vance had appeared on his behalf.
However, Orbán lost power after 16 years, as Hungarian voters turned out in record numbers to support a pro-European Union course led by Magyar.
