On the occasion of May Fourth Youth Day, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the country’s young people to play a central role in driving national development, urging them to align their personal ambitions with the broader goals of the state.

In a letter addressed to recipients of the China Youth May Fourth Medal and the New Era Youth Pioneer Award, Xi extended greetings to young people across the country and outlined his expectations for their role in the years ahead.

Youth at the Centre of National Goals

Xi praised the award recipients for their contributions across key sectors, including scientific and technological innovation, rural revitalisation, social services and border defence.

He said they had demonstrated the “spirit of Chinese youth in the new era” through their dedication, resilience and sense of responsibility.

“You have written a chapter of your youth without regrets through practical actions,” Xi noted, commending their work at the grassroots level.

Focus on New Five-Year Plan

Xi emphasised that this year marks the beginning of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, describing it as a critical period for the country’s development.

He urged young people to seize the opportunity, pursue ambitious goals and contribute meaningfully to national priorities.

Calling for hard work and commitment, Xi encouraged them to integrate their personal aspirations into the broader trajectory of China’s growth and modernisation.

Recognising Youth Role Models

The China Youth May Fourth Medal and the New Era Youth Pioneer Award are among the country’s top honours for young people, recognising those who are politically engaged, socially responsible and have made notable contributions.

Recently, 16 past recipients wrote to Xi, sharing their experiences from grassroots work and expressing their determination to contribute to national development and the goals of the new plan.

They also referenced embarking on a “new Long March” in the current era a symbolic call to sustained effort and collective progress.
