Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has warned that Taiwan remains the “biggest point of risk” in relations with the United States, during a call with Marco Rubio.

Wang stressed that the Taiwan issue touches on China’s “core interests” and urged Washington to honour its commitments and “make the right choices”, according to an official readout from Beijing.

Call Ahead of Expected Summit

The conversation comes weeks before an anticipated meeting between U.S President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing in mid-May.

It marks the first publicly known contact between Wang and Rubio since the outbreak of the Iran conflict in late February.

Push for Stability and Dialogue

Wang said both sides should prepare for “important high-level exchanges” and work to preserve the “hard-won stability” in bilateral relations.

He added that China and the United States should expand cooperation while managing differences.

Backdrop of Fragile Relations

The call follows a period of relative easing in tensions, including a tariff truce reached during a Trump–Xi meeting in South Korea last October.

Wang also referenced the “strategic guidance” of both leaders as key to maintaining stability in ties between the world’s two largest economies.

Middle East Also Discussed

The two officials also exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East, though no further details were provided in the Chinese readout.
