China may be preparing to supply Pakistan with a fifth-generation stealth fighter, a move that could significantly enhance Islamabad’s ability to conduct deep-strike operations and potentially shift the regional military balance.
A report by the South China Morning Post said China’s state broadcaster indicated plans to export the J-35A stealth fighter, with Pakistan widely seen as the most likely first buyer.
J-35AE Export Variant Unveiled
Footage aired on China’s state television showed what appeared to be an export variant of the aircraft, identified as the J-35AE, rolling out of a hangar with markings from the Aviation Industry Corporation of China rather than the Chinese air force.
The aircraft featured advanced elements such as an internally integrated electro-optical targeting system (EOTS), suggesting a mature, combat-ready platform suitable for international sales.
The unveiling is seen as the first full operational display of the export model, signalling readiness for delivery. Reports suggest Pakistan could acquire around 40 units as part of a broader defence package.
China Expands High-End Arms Exports
The potential deal reflects China’s broader push to compete with the United States in high-end arms exports, particularly in the stealth fighter segment dominated by platforms such as the F-35.
Pakistan has long been a key defence partner for China, accounting for a significant share of its arms exports, with estimates suggesting that up to 80% of Pakistan’s recent military imports have come from China.
Limits of Current Air Power Exposed
Recent India-Pakistan tensions have highlighted the limitations of fourth-generation fighter jets.
Pakistan’s J-10C drew attention during clashes in May 2025, with claims it had downed an Indian Rafale jet. However, analysts note that both sides faced operational constraints.
According to Christopher Clary, India’s S-400 air defence systems reportedly intercepted at least one Pakistani aircraft, while India also attempted surface-to-air engagements from within its territory.
Fifth-Generation Edge in Modern Warfare
Recent conflicts have underscored the growing importance of fifth-generation aircraft in modern warfare.
A 2025 report by Alexander Palmer and Kendall Ward highlighted how Israel’s F-35I jets were used in integrated strike operations, including intelligence and targeting roles, to neutralise advanced air defence systems.
Such capabilities could give Pakistan a significant operational advantage if equipped with stealth platforms like the J-35.
Regional Balance at Stake
The possible transfer of stealth fighters could complicate the already delicate strategic balance in South Asia, where both India and Pakistan are nuclear-armed rivals.
Analysts warn that the introduction of fifth-generation capabilities into the region may accelerate an arms race and increase risks of miscalculation during crises.
