U.S. President Donald Trump was met with loud boos from sections of the crowd during the FIFA World Cup trophy ceremony at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, moments after Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 to lift the world title.
Trump joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino on the pitch for the post-match presentation as players and officials gathered to receive their medals. The jeers from the stands began as the two leaders walked onto the field, briefly overshadowing the celebrations following Spain’s victory.
The boos gradually subsided as Trump and Infantino presented medals to players, coaches and match officials before handing the FIFA World Cup trophy to the Spanish team.
In an unusual moment during the ceremony, Trump remained on the presentation podium alongside the Spanish squad after the trophy had been presented. He stepped aside only after captain Rodri prepared to lift the World Cup trophy amid fireworks and celebrations.
Trump had already become a controversial figure during the tournament after personally contacting FIFA President Gianni Infantino over the suspension of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun.
Balogun had been shown a red card during the United States’ group-stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, triggering an automatic one-match suspension. Following Trump’s intervention, FIFA reviewed the case and suspended the ban, allowing the striker to return for the Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
Despite Balogun’s availability, the United States suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Belgium and exited the tournament.
Trump travelled to the stadium by helicopter for the final, which concluded with Spain claiming its latest World Cup triumph after edging Argentina in a tightly contested match.
