Sudan General Declares Emergency After ‘Coup’

Sudan appears to have witnessed its eighth coup since 1956: reports say Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok was taken away by soldiers. He was heading a transitional government put in place in 2019 after the overthrow of Omar Bashir in a coup. This seems to have derailed the plan for the transitional government to hold elections next year. In a televised address, the country’s top general declared a state of emergency, announcing that the cabinet had been dissolved.
