Myanmar Junta Suspends Striking Academics

More than 11,000 academic and other university staff opposed to the military junta have been suspended from their jobs after going on strike to protest the military takeover that took place on February 1. The suspensions were announced just as universities are set to reopen after being closed for the last year in the wake of the Coronavirus.

Students and teachers have been at the forefront of protests against the military coup. Security forces have occupied campuses in Yangon and elsewhere in the country in an effort to intimidate and discourage the protests.
