‘US Role In Pannun Affair Intended To Discredit India’?

NEW DELHI: What does the US hope to gain from going public with India’s alleged role in a plot to kill Khalistani extremist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun? Did the US encourage Canada’s Prime Minister Trudeau to go public with his accusation against India? Is Pannun a CIA asset?

In this conversation on The Gist, former foreign secretary Kanwal Sibal attempts to answer these and other questions. He acknowledges being baffled by the US wanting to work with India at various strategic levels while also seeking to bring it down.

He tries to answer the question whether the American Deep State is behind moves to discredit India? Or is it sending a message to the political establishment about India? In his view the US has always seen India’s non-alignment as heresy, and may view India seeking leadership of the Global South in the same vein.
