‘Hong Kong Will Fight China’s Move To Destroy Its Freedoms’

NEW DELHI: Barring a miracle, China appears all set to implement its tough national security law that would negate Hong Kong’s cherished freedoms. In an exclusive chat with StratNews Global Editor Surya Gangadharan, Alvin Leung, Hong Kong Legislator and Lawyer says the people of the territory will not accept China’s attempt to ram the security law down their throats. They will protest as they have done for so long. But he acknowledges they are up against a formidable foe. The People’s Liberation Army is present in force and although it has not been deployed so far to quell the protests, that may just be a matter of time. Already members of the legislature are reporting to Beijing. Senior police officers are taking orders from authorities in the mainland.

Leung called upon the international community to come forward and support the people of Hong Kong in their struggle. He urged India to step up given its high stakes in Hong Kong. There are hundreds of Indian citizens who are also HK residents, they have homes and deep stakes in the future. For their sakes, Leung says, India must not stay quiet but speak up.
