President Donald Trump’s high-profile summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing was overshadowed by a series of behind-the-scenes confrontations involving American reporters, White House staff and Chinese security officials.

While the public focus remained on trade, Taiwan and Iran, tensions reportedly boiled over offstage as Chinese authorities imposed strict controls on the visiting American delegation.

White House Staffer Knocked Down

One of the most dramatic incidents reportedly took place during Trump’s bilateral meeting with Xi on Thursday morning.

According to multiple reports, a large group of Chinese reporters rushed into the room, knocking down a White House advance staffer in the process. The aide was reportedly stepped on during the chaos and left bruised and shaken, though not seriously injured.

The incident angered members of the American delegation, with one official later overheard describing the situation as a “shit show”.

Secret Service Agent Blocked

Another confrontation unfolded later at Beijing’s Temple of Heaven.

Chinese security officials reportedly refused to allow a US Secret Service agent into the secure area because he was carrying a firearm, standard practice for presidential protection teams.

The disagreement reportedly delayed proceedings for around 30 minutes as American officials argued that the armed agent needed to accompany the press pool. Chinese authorities, however, refused to allow the weapon inside.

Eventually, another cleared Secret Service officer escorted the reporters while the first agent remained outside.

US Reporters Stopped From Joining Motorcade

Tensions rose again when members of the White House press corps were allegedly prevented from rejoining Trump’s motorcade after the Temple of Heaven event.

According to reporters present at the scene, Chinese officials directed the American media into a holding room and attempted to stop them from leaving.

As Trump prepared to depart, arguments reportedly broke out, with American officials insisting that the press pool needed to remain with the president at all times.

Eventually, American staff and journalists pushed past security personnel and hurried across the temple grounds to reach the waiting convoy.

Tight Restrictions And Complaints

American reporters also complained about strict restrictions during the summit.

Several journalists said Chinese officials confiscated water bottles and limited bathroom access despite hot weather in Beijing.

Reporters were also reportedly advised to use burner phones and temporary email accounts because of cyber-security concerns during the visit.

The summit’s heavy security and tight controls reflected the sensitivity surrounding one of the most important diplomatic meetings between Washington and Beijing in recent years.

Banquet Contrast Goes Viral

Social media users also focused on the contrast between the lavish hospitality shown to Trump and the treatment of the travelling press corps.

Reports circulating online claimed Trump and senior officials were served an elaborate lunch featuring seafood soup, crispy lobster balls, beef tenderloin, kung pao chicken and dumplings.

Meanwhile, several journalists claimed the White House press corps received McDonald’s Big Mac meals instead.

The contrast quickly became a talking point online, adding another layer to a summit already marked by both diplomatic theatre and behind-the-scenes friction.
