China’s ambassador to Nepal has used a column in The Kathmandu Post to underscore what Beijing describes as a new phase in Nepal-China relations following the recent visit of Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal to China.

Writing in the newspaper, the envoy described Khanal’s June 14-17 visit as an important milestone and the first official trip to China by a member of Nepal’s new government. The visit included meetings with senior Chinese leaders, including Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and top Communist Party officials.

According to the envoy, both sides reaffirmed support for each other’s core interests. The article noted that Nepal reiterated its commitment to the One-China policy and stated that issues concerning Taiwan and Tibet are China’s internal affairs.

The envoy said China, in turn, pledged continued support for Nepal’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and development priorities while expressing confidence in Nepal’s newly formed government.

The article outlined four priority areas for future cooperation: improving cross-border connectivity, expanding energy cooperation, boosting trade and investment, and increasing people-to-people exchanges through education, youth programmes and media cooperation.

The envoy also highlighted China’s support for the Belt and Road Initiative and called for closer coordination between the two countries’ development strategies. Greater cooperation in infrastructure, electricity and clean energy projects was presented as a key component of future engagement.

Looking beyond bilateral issues, the article argued that developing countries face increasing global uncertainty and should strengthen cooperation through multilateral frameworks. It also reiterated Beijing’s support for initiatives such as the Global Development Initiative and Global Security Initiative.

Describing Nepal as an important neighbour in China’s diplomatic strategy, the envoy said the two countries have maintained friendly relations for more than seven decades and should continue deepening their strategic partnership.
