Lithuania’s ruling Social Democratic Party announced on Tuesday that its leader, Mindaugas Sinkevicius, is prepared to become the country’s next prime minister, replacing Inga Ruginiene, who has held the post since last year.

In a statement published on social media, the party said Sinkevicius was ready to take responsibility for forming a new government and leading the country as prime minister.

The move comes amid political changes within Lithuania’s governing coalition. Earlier this month, the Social Democrats voted to remove Nemunas Dawn from the coalition government.

The party’s expulsion followed controversy surrounding its leader, who had previously been convicted on charges related to antisemitic remarks.

Sinkevicius’ expected appointment would mark a significant shift in Lithuania’s political leadership as the ruling party seeks to stabilise the coalition and chart a new course for the government.
