An Israeli air strike has killed the son of senior Hamas negotiator Khalil Al-Hayya, according to Hamas officials, as talks aimed at preserving the fragile Gaza ceasefire continue in Cairo.
Azzam Al-Hayya died on Thursday after suffering injuries in an Israeli strike carried out the previous night, senior Hamas official Basim Naim said. He is the fourth son of Khalil Al-Hayya to be killed in Israeli attacks over the years.
The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strike.
Multiple Assassination Attempts on Hayya
Khalil Al-Hayya, one of Hamas’ most senior political figures and a key negotiator in U.S.-mediated talks over Gaza’s future, has survived several Israeli assassination attempts.
An Israeli strike in Doha last year targeting Hamas leadership reportedly killed another of his sons, while Hayya himself survived. Two more sons were killed in separate Israeli strikes in Gaza in 2008 and 2014.
Speaking to Al Jazeera before his son’s death was officially announced, Hayya accused Israel of attempting to sabotage diplomatic efforts linked to U.S. President Donald Trump’s Gaza initiative.
“These Zionist attacks and violations clearly indicate that the occupation does not want to abide by a ceasefire or by the first phase,” he said.
Cairo Talks Focus on Gaza Ceasefire
The latest violence comes as Hamas leaders and other Palestinian factions hold talks in Cairo with regional mediators and representatives linked to Trump’s so-called “Board of Peace.”
The negotiations are focused on advancing the second phase of the Gaza agreement reached in October between Israel and Hamas.
The plan includes an Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza and reconstruction efforts in exchange for Hamas laying down its weapons. However, Hamas disarmament remains one of the biggest obstacles preventing further progress.
A Hamas official told Reuters the group would not engage in serious discussions on the second phase until Israel fully implements obligations from the first phase, including halting attacks entirely.
Ceasefire Remains Fragile
Despite the ceasefire agreement, violence has continued.
According to Palestinian medical officials, at least 830 Palestinians have been killed since the truce took effect. Israel says four of its soldiers have been killed by militants during the same period.
Israeli officials maintain that ongoing strikes are aimed at preventing attacks by Hamas and other armed groups against Israeli forces.
