China sharply criticised remarks by Japan and the European Union at a United Nations Security Council meeting on maritime security, escalating diplomatic tensions over the South China Sea and regional stability.

At the session, Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Ayano Kunimitsu expressed concern about developments in the East China Sea and South China Sea, warning against attempts to change the status quo by force and stressing the importance of freedom of navigation.

Representing the EU, Stavros Lambrinidis highlighted rising tensions in the South China Sea, describing them as a threat to a key global shipping route and the rules-based international order.

Neither official mentioned China directly.

China Pushes Back

China’s deputy U.N. ambassador Sun Lei dismissed the remarks as “unwarranted,” accusing Japan of distorting facts and urging the EU to avoid what he called “unsubstantiated and irresponsible” statements.

Sun maintained that the situation in the East and South China Seas remains stable, describing the South China Sea as “one of the freest shipping lanes in the world.”

Taiwan Strait Accusations

Beijing also accused Japan of escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

Sun alleged that Japanese vessels had recently entered the area to “flex their muscles,” warning that such actions sent the wrong signals to what China views as separatist forces in Taiwan.

Taiwan, a self-governed island, is claimed by China as part of its territory.

Strained China–Japan Relations

The Chinese envoy further criticised remarks made last year by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan, saying they had seriously damaged bilateral relations.

Ties between the two countries have deteriorated in recent years, with growing tensions over security issues and territorial disputes.

Claims of Military Expansion

China accused Japan of shifting towards a more aggressive defence posture, pointing to increased military spending, deployment of offensive weapons, and relaxed restrictions on arms exports.

Sun warned of a resurgence of militarism in Japan, remarks likely to deepen friction between the two regional powers.

Wider Regional Concerns

The exchange comes amid heightened tensions across the Asia-Pacific. China has significantly expanded its military capabilities in recent years, fortified disputed areas in the South China Sea, and conducted large-scale exercises around Taiwan.

Meanwhile, Japan and other regional actors have stepped up their own security measures, reflecting growing concerns over stability in one of the world’s most strategically vital regions.
