China’s commerce ministry has initiated two counter-probes into U.S. practices that it says are restricting the flow of Chinese products into the United States, while holding off on immediate retaliation against recent U.S. measures.

Response to U.S. Investigations

The two investigations are described as reciprocal responses to U.S. Section 301 probes targeting China.

According to the ministry, the probes are expected to conclude within six months, though they may be extended if necessary.

Based on the findings, China said it would take “corresponding measures” to safeguard its rights and interests.

Trade Truce Still Holds

Despite the latest move, a trade truce between the two sides remains in place since U.S. President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in October last year.

Trump has also indicated plans to visit Beijing in mid-May as part of broader efforts to reset ties in the Asia-Pacific region.

Rising Trade Concerns

Earlier this month, the United States launched investigations into excess industrial capacity across 16 trading partners, including China, as well as into forced labour concerns.

China raised objections during bilateral trade talks in Paris and reiterated its concerns during discussions at a World Trade Organization meeting in Cameroon.

Room for Cooperation

In talks with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao signalled that Beijing remains open to strengthening economic and trade cooperation despite ongoing disputes.
