An Italian military base in Erbil, in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, was struck by a missile overnight, though no injuries were reported among Italian personnel, the defence ministry said on Thursday.
In a statement posted on X shortly after midnight, the ministry confirmed that a missile had hit the base but said all Italian troops stationed there were safe.
“A missile hit our base in Erbil. There are no casualties or injuries among the Italian personnel. They are all fine,” the ministry said.
Troops Took Shelter During Strike
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said the soldiers took shelter in a bunker during the attack and confirmed that all personnel were safe.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto remained in contact with senior military commanders throughout the incident, the defence ministry said.
Italian Mission In Kurdistan
Italy currently has around 300 troops stationed in Erbil as part of an international effort to train Kurdish security forces.
The deployment forms part of Italy’s broader military mission in the region aimed at supporting local forces and maintaining stability.
Authorities have not yet provided details about the source of the missile or the circumstances surrounding the attack.
