South Korea will continue consultations with the United States to preserve what it described as a “balance of interests” in bilateral trade, its industry minister said on Monday, signalling a cautious approach amid shifting U.S. tariff policies.
Speaking in televised remarks during a meeting with business leaders, the minister emphasised the importance of maintaining stability in economic ties between the two allies.
Tariff Uncertainty After Court Ruling
The comments come after sweeping import tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump were overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, creating uncertainty for trading partners.
South Korea has been subject to tariffs of around 15% under previous measures, though it remains unclear how Washington will proceed following the legal setback.
The minister did not outline any immediate countermeasures or policy changes from Seoul, suggesting the government is waiting for greater clarity from the U.S. side.
Focus on Economic Stability
Officials appear keen to avoid escalation and instead prioritise dialogue with Washington to safeguard trade flows and business confidence.
The reference to a “balance of interests” reflects South Korea’s effort to manage its strategic economic relationship with the United States while protecting domestic industries from abrupt policy shifts.
With global trade tensions still evolving, Seoul’s next steps are likely to depend on how the U.S. recalibrates its tariff regime in the coming weeks.
