The German government is set to purchase strike drones worth €536 million ($638 million) from domestic startups Helsing and Stark Defence. This move forms part of a broader €4.3 billion framework deal aimed at strengthening Germany’s military capabilities in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

Loitering Munitions for Tank Brigade

The drones, known as loitering munitions, hover over potential strike areas before attacking designated targets. Initially, they will support Germany’s 45th Tank Brigade, currently deployed in Lithuania as part of NATO operations.

Contract Details and Delivery Timeline

The agreements with Helsing and Stark Defence are expected to last seven years, with the first batch of drones slated for delivery by early 2027. Documents reviewed by Reuters indicate that the contracts are likely to be approved swiftly by the lower house of parliament’s budget committee.

Strategic Rearmament Effort

The acquisition reflects Germany’s ongoing defence modernisation in light of regional security threats. The deal demonstrates Berlin’s commitment to leveraging domestic defence startups while enhancing operational readiness for NATO deployments in Eastern Europe.
