Yemen’s Iran-allied Houthis claim to have launched attacks on three ships in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. However, shipping giant Maersk dismissed the militants’ report that one of its vessels was targeted.
Houthi Attacks in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea
The Houthis, who control the most populous parts of Yemen, have been attacking shipping in the region for months. They state that these attacks are acts of solidarity with Palestinians fighting Israel in Gaza.
In a televised address on Wednesday, Houthi military
spokesperson Yahya Saree announced that missiles and drones were used against two ships, Roza and Vantage Dream, in the Red Sea. He did not specify when these attacks occurred. Saree also claimed that drones targeted the U.S. vessel Maersk Seletar in the Arabian Sea, but provided no further details.
Maersk’s Response
Maersk’s Media Relations Manager, Kevin Doell, responded on Thursday, stating that no such incident had been reported by Maersk Seletar. He confirmed that the vessel was continuing its voyage without any interruptions.
