Wang Yi: China, Japan Relations At Critical “Stage Of Retreat”

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed concern over the state of China-Japan relations, stating that they are at a “critical stage of retreat if they do not advance.” His remarks came during talks with his Japanese counterpart, Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, at the ASEAN Summit in Laos on Friday.

Emphasis on Bilateral Understanding

Wang Yi emphasized the need for Japan to develop “an objective and correct understanding of China” and to adopt a “positive and rational China policy.” This statement highlights Beijing’s desire for improved bilateral relations and mutual respect.

Potential for Cooperation and Unresolved Issues

Yoko Kamikawa acknowledged the potential for cooperation between China and Japan but also noted the presence of unresolved issues. One significant point of contention is Japan’s alignment with the United States on semiconductor export restrictions, which has angered Beijing.

Kamikawa clarified that Japan’s semiconductor export restrictions are not targeted at any specific country and expressed Japan’s willingness to maintain constructive communication with China to address these issues properly.

Managing Differences and Promoting Stability

Wang Yi called for both nations to work in the same direction to safeguard the political foundation of their bilateral relations and manage their differences appropriately. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a stable and cooperative relationship.

Kamikawa echoed these sentiments, stating that Japan is ready to work with China to promote regional stability and prosperity in the face of global and regional conflicts.
