US Clears $20 Billion Arms Sale To Israel Including F-15 Jets

US Israel

The United States (US) on Tuesday approved a $20 billion sale of fighter jets and other military equipment to Israel as the country continues its 10-month-long war in the Gaza Strip. Despite the approval, the Pentagon stated that deliveries of these weapons and equipment would not begin for several years.

Details Of The Military Sale

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken authorised the sale, which includes nearly $19 billion worth of F-15 fighter jets, along with $774 million in tank cartridges, over $60 million in explosive mortar cartridges, and $583 million in army vehicles. The Boeing Co. F-15 jets, which make up the bulk of the sale, are expected to take years to produce, with deliveries starting in 2029. Other equipment is scheduled to begin delivery in 2026, though experts suggest some items could be delivered earlier.

“The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to U.S. national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defence capability,” the Pentagon said in its statement.

Israeli And U.S. Responses

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressed gratitude on social media, thanking U.S. officials for their support in maintaining Israel’s “qualitative military edge” in the region. The U.S., as Israel’s largest ally and primary weapons supplier, has provided significant military support since the conflict began, including more than 10,000 2,000-pound bombs and thousands of Hellfire missiles.

Ongoing Conflict And Humanitarian Impact

The ongoing war, which started on October 7 when Hamas attacked Israel, has led to devastating consequences in Gaza, including a high civilian death toll. Nearly 40,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Gaza health ministry, and the conflict has displaced almost the entire population of 2.3 million. The situation has also triggered a hunger crisis and led to genocide allegations at the World Court, which Israel denies.

Despite Washington’s efforts to mediate a ceasefire, including a three-phase proposal laid out by President Joe Biden on May 31, peace efforts have so far been unsuccessful. The U.S. has faced increasing criticism, both domestically and internationally, for its continued military support of Israel amid the ongoing conflict.
