British Defence Minister John Healey expressed confidence on Monday that the incoming Trump administration will maintain strong support for NATO and Ukraine. Speaking to Sky News, Healey responded to questions on the US commitment following Trump’s recent presidential election victory, affirming that Trump understands the role of strength in national and alliance security.
“As far as President Trump goes, he recognises that countries achieve security through strength, just as alliances like NATO do,” Healey stated. He expects that the US will continue supporting allies, including the UK, as they back Ukraine “for as long as it takes” to counter Russian aggression.
US and NATO: Long-Standing Commitment Under Trump
Healey underscored his belief that the US commitment to NATO and European security will remain firm under a Trump administration. While he acknowledged that European nations could contribute more, especially through increased defence spending, he stressed that the US recognises the importance of NATO. “I don’t expect the US to turn away from NATO,” he noted, adding that the US values the alliance’s role in preventing further conflict in Europe.
Calls for Greater Defence Efforts Among European Allies
Healey also pointed out the need for European nations to take on more responsibility for defence. In line with his long-standing view, he highlighted the importance of greater defence contributions from European members, urging them to share the responsibility. The British Defence Minister’s comments reflect a hope for continued unity and commitment from NATO allies, even with a new US administration.
