As tensions escalate in the South China Sea, two prominent Republican senators are urging President Biden to take decisive action. Senators Roger Wicker and Jim Risch, top members of key Senate committees, have formally requested a comprehensive list of options to support the Philippines in its ongoing conflict with China.

Heart of the dispute lies over the Second Thomas Shoal

At the heart of this dispute lies the Second Thomas Shoal, where the Philippines maintains a grounded warship to assert its maritime claims. Recently, tensions boiled over into violence, with a Filipino sailor injured during a clash with a Chinese coast guard vessel on June 17, 2024.

In response to these developments, the senators sent a letter to Biden on July 12, emphasizing the need for “visible and concrete demonstrations” of US support. They argue that anything less could undermine the credibility of America’s commitments to its allies.

U.S. is bound by treaty to aid the Philippines against China

Specifically, Wicker and Risch are seeking military, diplomatic, and economic options developed by the State and Defense Departments. This request underscores the gravity of the situation and the potential for further escalation.

The United States is bound by a long-standing mutual defense treaty to protect Philippine aircraft and vessels in the region. However, the senators believe that mere verbal assurances are insufficient in the face of China’s aggressive behavior.

Philippines president sends signals

Meanwhile, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called for action beyond diplomatic protests, signaling a desire for more robust support from allies like the US. Despite this, the Philippines has not yet formally requested US assistance in resupplying its troops stationed at the shoal.

Currently, the US provides limited intelligence support to the Philippines. However, given the strategic importance of the South China Sea to global trade, there’s mounting pressure for a more substantial response.

Biden administration considering its options against China

As the Biden administration considers its options, the world watches closely. The US response to this situation could significantly impact not only Philippines-China relations but also the broader geopolitical landscape in Southeast Asia.

With China’s growing assertiveness and the vital importance of maintaining free navigation in these waters, the stakes are higher than ever. The coming weeks may prove crucial in determining the future of US engagement in the South China Sea dispute and its commitment to regional allies.
