Former US president Donald Trump has said that he favours a national abortion ban after a certain number of weeks.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump said that he would “soon” issue a proposal on the number of weeks at which a ban should be implemented.
“We’re going to find out. Pretty soon, I’m gonna be making a decision. I would like to see if we could make both sides happy,” he added.
He however stopped short of mentioning the point when he believed that abortions should be banned.
Trump said, “I think the recommendation will be accepted.” He added that he was proud of the fact that the three Supreme Court judges he had recommended had tilted the court’s balance rightwards.
Trump pointed out that the ban on abortion after a certain number of weeks exists in countries like France and other European nations.
In the US, states can decide on their own abortion laws. Some have implemented near-total bans, while others like Maryland have laws to enshrine abortion rights.
Joe Biden has said that most Americans oppose a federal ban and pointed out that the 2022 midterm elections in Pennsylvania should serve as a reminder to everyone that the Republican candidate who opposed abortion rights was defeated.
Trump’s former vice-president Mike Pence said that he did believe Trump erred in not taking a firmer anti-abortion position during the 2020 presidential campaign. He added the he would want to see a Republican candidate support a ban from at least 15 weeks.
In 1999, Trump publicly said that was a supporter of abortion rights and when asked about whether he would ban abortions, he said, “I’m very pro-choice. I hate the concept of abortion. … But still, I just believe in choice,” the NBC reported.
Since then, his views have changed. In 2016, Trump said that he was a vocal opponent of women’s right to abortion and that any woman who undergoes abortion should be subjected to some sort of punishment.
