There are an estimated 2,70,000 Indian students in the US, testifying to the draw of American universities in this country. But the deaths of six of them in January alone is not only tragedy and trauma for six families, it underscores the risk students face so far from home.
Not all the deaths were murders, and when viewed in the context of the sheer number of Indian students there, the deaths may not throw up anything out of the ordinary. investigations alone will determine what happened and the reasons for it.
It’s also of concern to note that 403 Indian students have died overseas since 2018. These figures were given by the government in parliament. Clearly, those numbers are serious and call for deep introspection.
