North Korea Ramps Up Suicide Drone Production, Urges Revised Military Strategies

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has directed the mass production of suicide drones, calling their global emergence a pressing reason to revise military strategies, according to state media reports on Friday. This decision follows Kim’s ongoing supervision of drone development as part of the nation’s expanding military cooperation with Russia.

A Strategic Shift Towards Suicide Drones

Earlier this year, Kim oversaw the testing of suicide drones, also known as loitering munitions. These weapons, which hover before striking targets, have been widely employed in conflicts like the war in Ukraine and the Middle East. The potential involvement of Russia in aiding North Korea’s development of such drones has raised international concern.

Kim urged for the rapid establishment of a serial production system, emphasising the importance of accelerating mass production efforts. He noted that the global competition in drone technology has made these weapons an essential military tool, demonstrating their success in conflicts of varying scales.

Adapting Military Theory and Practice

The North Korean leader highlighted that the proliferation of drone warfare requires urgent changes to military theories and operational practices. Kim stated, as quoted by the KCNA news agency, that these changes must also extend to military education, reflecting the evolving nature of warfare.

North Korea has already used drones to cross into South Korea, targeting key areas, including the capital Seoul and sensitive zones such as the no-fly area near South Korea’s presidential office. These incursions prompted South Korea to enhance its drone defence systems.

Strengthening Ties with Russia

North Korea’s partnership with Russia has further intensified, with the two nations recently ratifying a comprehensive strategic agreement. This pact includes mutual defence commitments. According to South Korean and US officials, North Korean soldiers have been deployed to Russia’s western frontlines in Ukraine, reportedly engaging in combat alongside Russian forces.

The growing collaboration between North Korea and Russia has raised questions about the role of shared military technologies and the implications for regional and global security.
