North Korea has revealed plans to build a 10,000-ton destroyer and develop undisclosed underwater weapons, according to state media reports released ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pyongyang.

The announcement came through the state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun, which reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a naval test on Thursday and ordered the rapid deployment of the destroyers Kang Kon and Choe Hyon.

The Kang Kon is a 5,000-ton warship that was relaunched after suffering a high-profile accident during its initial launch in 2025. The Choe Hyon is another major naval vessel in North Korea’s expanding fleet.

First Mention Of 10,000-Ton Destroyer

The report marks the first time North Korea has publicly disclosed plans for a 10,000-ton destroyer, a significant step up in naval capability.

Analysts say the announcement could be aimed at showcasing Pyongyang’s growing military strength ahead of Xi’s first visit to North Korea in nearly seven years.

Kim also stressed the need to strengthen naval forces to deter nuclear conflict and called for powerful military capabilities across land, sea and air.

Military Signals Before Xi’s Arrival

The naval announcement follows Kim’s recent call for an “exponential” expansion of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal during a visit to a nuclear material production facility.

Photos published by state media showed Kim accompanied by his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, who is widely viewed as a potential future leader.

Xi is expected to arrive in Pyongyang on Monday for a two-day visit as Beijing seeks to reinforce ties with its long-time ally amid growing regional tensions.
