Hungary has announced it will not obstruct NATO decisions to support Ukraine. However, it has agreed not to be directly involved in these efforts. This statement was made by Prime Minister Viktor Orban during NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s visit to Budapest.
Hungary’s Stance and NATO Relations
Hungary has been at odds with other NATO countries due to Orban’s close ties with Russia and refusal to send arms to Ukraine. Last month, Hungary’s foreign minister labelled plans to aid Ukraine a “crazy mission.” Despite these differences, Orban confirmed Hungary would not block NATO decisions, even if they differed from Hungary’s assessment.
Orban mentioned that Stoltenberg assured Hungary it would not have to provide funding or send personnel to Ukraine. While Western countries have considered training Ukrainian troops, NATO has emphasised it does not want direct involvement in the conflict.
Hungary has previously frustrated allies by blocking aid to Ukraine, causing tensions at European Union foreign ministers’ meetings. Stoltenberg’s visit follows a summit of eastern NATO states in Riga, which Hungary did not attend, highlighting its differences with neighbours over Ukraine support.
Preparations for NATO Summit
This meeting is part of preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in Washington in July. At the summit, members are expected to agree on a €40 billion ($43 billion) annual support package for Ukraine. Stoltenberg expressed confidence that NATO leaders would finalise the agreement in Washington.
Hungary’s decision not to block NATO support for Ukraine marks a significant step in the alliance’s efforts. However, Hungary’s non-involvement stance reflects its ongoing cautious approach toward the conflict.
