Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ meeting in New Delhi, as both sides reviewed recent progress in bilateral relations and explored ways to deepen engagement.

India, which currently chairs the BRICS grouping, is hosting the meeting of National Security Advisers and High Representatives on National Security on June 22 and 23.

Focus on Normalisation of Relations

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions between Doval and Wang were “constructive and forward-looking”, with both leaders taking stock of recent developments in the relationship.

The two sides noted progress towards the gradual normalisation of ties following years of tensions that began after the 2020 border clash along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Relations between the two Asian neighbours have improved since 2024, with both countries working to stabilise ties through diplomatic and military engagement.

China Calls for Greater Engagement

According to a statement issued by China’s Foreign Ministry, Wang stressed the importance of respecting each other’s core interests and handling sensitive issues appropriately.

“We must respect each other’s core interests and properly handle sensitive issues,” Wang said.

He also called for the resumption of bilateral dialogue mechanisms and greater cooperation in areas including trade, finance, law enforcement and media exchanges.

BRICS and Global Governance

During the discussions, Wang also highlighted the role of BRICS in promoting a multipolar world order and strengthening cooperation among emerging economies.

He said the BRICS mechanism should actively support the advancement of global multipolarisation and play a greater role in international affairs.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

The meeting comes amid broader efforts by both India and China to manage differences while expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has expanded in recent years to include several new members, increasing its influence in global economic and political affairs.

The New Delhi meeting is expected to focus on regional security, global governance reforms, counter-terrorism cooperation and strengthening coordination among BRICS nations.
