China’s Xi For Stronger Border Defences Ahead Of PLA Anniversary

Xi jinping

China’s President Xi Jinping has called for the enhancement of the country’s border, sea, and air defences to safeguard territorial sovereignty and maritime interests. The official Xinhua news agency reported these remarks on Wednesday.

Importance of Defence for China’s Sovereignty

According to Xinhua, Xi emphasised that border, sea, and air defence are crucial symbols of China’s sovereignty. They are also vital for the nation’s development. Xi made these comments during a collective study session of the Communist Party’s politburo on Tuesday. These sessions, held every month or two, provide insights into the priorities and current thinking of China’s top leadership.

Recent Military and Political Developments

In July 2023, following a study session on strengthening military governance, Xi appointed a new head for the armed forces overseeing China’s conventional and nuclear missiles. This appointment came just before the 96th anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) on August 1. The June 2024 study session focused on party governance and corruption, leading to the removal of former Defence Minister Li Shangfu and former PLA Rocket Force Commander Li Yuchao due to corruption charges.

Coordination of Defence and Development

During Tuesday’s study session, Xi stressed the need to coordinate the promotion of border, sea, and air defence with the economic and social development of border and coastal areas. He highlighted the importance of technological empowerment and the creation of “new means and conditions” to strengthen these defences.

Increased Defence Budget and Regional Tensions

The Chinese government increased its 2024 defence budget by 7.2%, mirroring the previous year’s rate and surpassing the government’s economic growth forecast. This move comes amid rising tensions over Taiwan and the South China Sea. Taiwan, a democratically ruled island, is claimed by China as part of its territory. The South China Sea has also seen increasing clashes between Beijing and Manila over competing maritime claims.

US Support for the Philippines

In a show of support for Manila, the United States pledged $500 million on Tuesday to fund the Philippines’ military and coast guard. This pledge comes as the Philippines faces escalating Chinese actions in the South China Sea.
