India is aiming to launch discussions on a free trade agreement with Canada during Prime Minister Mark Carney’s upcoming visit, Trade Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday.
Officials are working to finalise the terms of reference, with both sides expected to formally initiate negotiations later this week.
High-Level Diplomatic Engagement
Carney’s visit to India forms part of a broader Indo-Pacific tour from February 26 to March 7, which also includes Australia and Japan.
During his India leg, Carney is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, signalling a renewed push to strengthen bilateral ties after a period of strained relations.
Focus on Strategic Sectors
Beyond trade, discussions are expected to cover key sectors including energy, artificial intelligence, technology, and critical minerals.
The outreach reflects a broader effort by both countries to deepen economic cooperation and align on emerging industries critical to future growth.
Wider Indo-Pacific Strategy
Canada’s parallel engagements with Australia and Japan indicate a wider strategic push in the Indo-Pacific region, as Ottawa seeks to diversify partnerships and strengthen economic and technological linkages across Asia.
