Less than 10 days after holding elections, the politicians are getting their act together with a wary eye on what the men in khaki want. As Ramanathan Kumar, former Special Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat argued on The Gist, Nawaz Sharif knowing that the decks are stacked in the army’s favour, has opted for the next best thing:
He has stepped aside in favour of his brother Shehbaz Sharif as prime minister and daughter Maryam Nawaz will build her administrative skills as chief minister of Punjab. PPP’s Zardari wants to be president: he gets a five year term, immunity from prosecution for his many acts of corruption and ensures son Bilawal is in government.
Of course, all this may not happen, but the politicians are preparing for the next round, which could happen two years from now or even earlier when this coalition collapses under the weight of its own contradictions, says Ramanathan.
Tune in for more in this conversation with Ramanathan Kumar on The Gist.
