Thailand is mulling shutting down bars and restaurants amid a surge of Coronavirus infections, more than 4,800 on Thursday alone. If the government goes ahead, the country’s tourism industry, its biggest revenue generator, could find itself on the brink.
The latest wave of the virus has its origins in nightspot clusters popular among Bangkok’s rich. Add to that, the capital’s prisons were found riddled with the virus with 2,835 prisoners testing positive in two jails. Deaths have been low so far, about 400, but hospital beds are full and the government is scrambling to roll out vaccines.
