Indonesia Kills Wanted Separatist

Security forces in the Indonesian territory of Papua say they shot and killed a separatist commander responsible for the assassination of a senior intelligence officer. The police say Lesman Waker was killed during an operation in the village of Wuloni, said to be a hiding place for separatist groups.

Jakarta despatched 400 battle hardened troops to Papua in the wake of renewed separatist stirrings. Papuan rebels say a UN referendum held in 1969 that saw the territory become part of Indonesia, was illegitimate. Papua was then a Dutch colony.
