NEW DELHI: As the Chinese Communist Party turns 100, it’s as much an occasion for celebration as also for introspection. It boasts a membership of over a 100 million but that has also led to a dilution in the party’s values. Xi Jinping is trying to control membership to stop dilution of the core ideology of the party, says former foreign secretary and China analyst Vijay Gokhale. “What President Xi Jinping is trying to do is bring ideology at least notionally back into the party by saying that in the future, promotions will not just depend upon competence or professionalism, it will also depend on your ideological bent of mind, on how Red you are,” the former Ambassador to China told StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale. This is the first of a three-part series on CCP@100.
