Mixed Signals Emerge As Iran, U.S. Explore Possible Deal

Iran’s latest peace proposal to U.S. calls for a comprehensive end to hostilities, including in Lebanon, the withdrawal of U.S. forces from areas near Iran, and compensation for damage caused by the U.S.-Israeli conflict, state media reported on Tuesday.

In Tehran’s first public comments on the proposal, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the plan also includes demands for lifting sanctions, unfreezing Iranian assets, and ending the U.S. maritime blockade, according to IRNA news agency.

The terms as described in the Iranian reports appeared little changed from Iran’s previous offer, which U.S. President Donald Trump rejected last week as “garbage”.

Trump Signals Possible Deal

Trump said Monday he had paused a planned resumption of strikes on Iran after Tehran submitted a new peace proposal to Washington, saying there was a “very good chance” of a deal to limit Iran’s nuclear programme.

He also said leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE urged him to hold off, expressing confidence that an agreement acceptable to the U.S. and the wider region could be reached.

Speaking to reporters, Trump added that Washington would be satisfied with any deal that prevents Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

A Pakistani source confirmed that Islamabad, which has conveyed messages between the sides since hosting the only round of peace talks last month, had shared the Iranian proposal with Washington.

Mixed Signals

The source said the United States had agreed to release about a quarter of Iran’s frozen assets held in foreign banks, worth tens of billions of dollars, though Iran is demanding full access.

It also claimed Washington had shown greater flexibility on allowing limited peaceful nuclear activity under International Atomic Energy Agency supervision.

However, the U.S. has not confirmed any such agreement. A U.S. official denied reports that sanctions on Iranian oil had been waived during talks.

The conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran has caused extensive casualties and displacement across the region, with a recent ceasefire largely holding despite sporadic drone activity in the Gulf.

Despite the war, Iran retains its nuclear materials and missile capabilities, while its leadership remains intact amid continued regional tensions.
