Negotiations Close to Conclusion
Negotiations between Japan and the Philippines for a Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) on defence and security are nearing completion, according to Japan’s ambassador to Manila, Kazuya Endo. Ambassador Endo highlighted the Philippines’ crucial role in maintaining regional stability and security during a speech on Thursday.
Anticipated Developments in Defence
Ambassador Endo noted that significant progress is expected concerning the transfer of defence equipment. The upcoming meeting in Manila on July 8 between Japanese and Philippine foreign and defence ministers could include a major breakthrough in their defence pact. This agreement would allow military forces from both nations to visit each other’s territories, enhancing their collaborative efforts.
Strengthening Regional Alliances
The Philippines has been strengthening its relationships with neighbouring countries and other international partners to address China’s increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea. The potential agreement with Japan is part of this broader strategy to bolster regional security and cooperation.
Importance of Taiwan Strait Stability
Maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is critical for the overall security of the Indo-Pacific region, Endo emphasised. This stance aligns with the shared interests of both Japan and the Philippines in ensuring a stable and secure regional environment.
