Street protests across Iran against what these people allege is a major violation by Israel.
The Iranians allege an Israeli airstrike on Monday demolished Iran’s mission in Syria. Iran claims two of its generals and five officers were killed in the attack on its embassy’s consular section in Damascus. This marks a major escalation ever since the war in Gaza began about six months ago. Iran supports the terrorist groups fighting against Israel in Gaza and after the war began in Gaza, Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah have frequently exchanged fire.
But the latest attack threatens to snowball further, with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard saying the strike killed Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who led the elite Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria until 2016, and his deputy. The attack brings back memories of General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. drone attack in 2020 in Iraq. Iran has called the attack on its mission a blatant violation of international regulations, especially the 1961 Vienna convention.
Hossein Akbari, the Iranian envoy to Syria, claimed Israeli F-35 fighter jets targeted the building with six missiles.
The attack has been condemned by Russia and countries across West Asia. Iran has sought an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council. And its proxy Hezbollah has vowed to take revenge.
