NEW DELHI: An agreement on an interim trade deal with India is doubtful during UK prime minister Boris Johnson’s two day visit beginning Thursday. That’s the view held out by Rahul Roy Chaudhary, head of the South Asia research programme at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.
interviewed on The Gist programme, Chaudhary acknowledged that considerable progress had been made in the FTA negotiations, but there are difficult issues for both sides and a deal could take time. In his view, there could be progress in defence cooperation with “BoJo” offering India British industry expertise in cybersecurity and niche technologies.
Ukraine is the elephant in the room and BoJo is expected to underscore his government’s hope that India will come out strongly against Russia’s invasion. Tune in for more in this conversation with Rahul Roy Chaudhary.
